Science Says Eat More Dark Chocolate

Science Says Eat More Dark Chocolate.

We've Been Saying That for Years.

Okay, that's not exactly what the researchers said. But it's close enough that we're going to run with it. ๐Ÿ˜Š

A large study published in The BMJ followed over 192,000 people for more than 30 years.

People who ate dark chocolate regularly had a 21% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who rarely or never ate it.

We read that a few times just to make sure. ๐Ÿ‘€

Milk chocolate showed no such benefit, by the way. (More sugar, less cacao, fewer of the natural compounds that seem to actually matter.)

Why we actually care about this

When we started making 712 Chocolate, it came from a pretty simple place.

We wanted to cut refined sugar out of our lives without giving up chocolate. (That felt non-negotiable, honestly.) So we started experimenting with local honey instead. Something natural, and from just down the road in Corman Park.

We weren't trying to make a health product. We just wanted to make something that tasted really good.

Here's what we find genuinely exciting about honey: Refined sugar brings nothing beyond sweetness. Honey carries natural polyphenols and antioxidants that research consistently links to real health benefits. (It also has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar, meaning a gentler, steadier effect on blood sugar.)

That lines up pretty well with what Harvard found. (and theyโ€™re super smart about these things)

The flavanols in cacao appear to support healthy blood vessel function and insulin response. The closer chocolate stays to actual cacao, the better the story seems to get.

The honest part

The study was observational. (Meaning it found a connection, not a guarantee.) Nobody is swapping their medication for a chocolate bar, and we're definitely not suggesting that.

But the research keeps pointing in the same direction.

When you take high-quality cacao, add local honey instead of refined sugar, and then make by hand in small batches right here in Saskatchewan, seems like a win/win/win (can you have three wins?)

We still just think it tastes really good. But we'll take the science too.

So what are you trying to say? It's simple:

You should eat more chocolate!
